The Dētraform model 500 telephone presents a new evolution in home phone design. My goal is to create a fresh, sincere design, while including a sense of memory and an allusion to classic phones, all the while, avoiding novelty, kitsch and a failed idea of retro.
Two elements in particular are inspired directly from historical phone designs. The plastic used for the front panel will mimic the colour, gloss, feel and weight of the old bakelite plastic used on rotary dial phones. Secondly, the ear and month piece holes (size and grid pattern) are derived from the 1968 Canadian designed Contempra phone. Pictured is a series of ear and mouth pieces from telephones both old and new.
